Originally titled "Liberty Enlightening the World", the Statue of Liberty was a gift to America from the people of France. The steel and copper colossus designed by sculptor Frederic Auguste Bartholdi, and engineered by Gustave Eiffel, was presented to the United States on July 4, 1884. It was officially accepted by President Grover Cleveland on October 28, 1886. Construction of Liberty began in 1875 in France and was shipped to the United States early in 1885.
