The P.T. Boat was one of the smallest and deadliest boats the U.S. Navy had in operation during World War II. These sleek craft would motor in under cover of night and torpedo enemy shipping.

When reports were received that enemy destroyers were in the area, PT-109, captained by Lt. (Jg) John F. Kennedy, was sent to locate them. As darkness fell, the P.T. Boat stopped to listen for any sounds that would indicate the position of the ships. Without warning, the bow of a Japanese destroyer suddenly loomed up on the starboard bow. The fast moving destroyer rammed PT-109 splitting it in two. The survivors made it onto the floating section of the 109, and at daybreak swam to one of the many small islands in the area. Helped by friendly islanders and a Coast Watcher, the crew of PT-109 were rescued 7 days after their boat went down.
